Flyball

What is Flyball?
Actually, it is a relay race played with a tennis ball, hurdles and a spring-loaded box. Four dogs take turns jumping over 4 hurdles that are set 10 feet apart, heights are based on the shortest dog's height. The current world record is under 15 seconds, for the entire team.

What does a dog need to learn to do Flyball?
Of course, basic obedience and a decent recall are important! There are also Flyball specific skills that the dogs and handlers will learn in class, such as the run back, swimmers turn, jumping, turning, hitting the box with all 4’s, and passing. Drive is important but being ball crazy, although a plus, is not a prerequisite. Flyball is a game for our dogs, and they will think it is fun, fun, fun!

Who does Flyball?
We have a handful of dogs and handlers that are at an advanced enough level that we have formed a team and will begin competing this year. If you see a person wearing a fabulous bright yellow tye-dye K-9 t-shirt ask them about Flyball at K-9, as they are a part of the Flyball team, K-9's Running Rebels. The instructor is Marty Wojtal (Harley/Border Collie) you can or call 414.358.3067 with any questions.

About Flyball at K-9
We started in December of 2005 with lessons that break down all the skills needed for Flyball and have been working hard ever since. The team practices twice a week at K-9 on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. With beginners and intermediates practicing on Sundays. We typically participate in the State Fair Flyball demonstration every year, plus have been invited to demonstrations and “mock” tournaments around the local area. We continue to improve and have even added some new dogs. This year we will begin competing!

Interested in Flyball?
Beginner classes run for about 8 weeks, then will be evaluated and placed accordingly. We may run another 8 week intermediate session or place dogs on a team. Start dates for the beginner class are listed in the top right column. We welcome all breeds, but especially need small dogs (height dogs) and fast dogs. Bring a buckle collar or a harness (please, no choke or pinch collars), treats, water (for both of you), earplugs (optional - it gets LOUD), enthusiasm, and patience.
